HISTORISCH MUSEUM VRIEZENVEEN

The Historical Museum Vriezenveen houses unique curiosities of the Rusluie's trade and pioneering spirit, of the local textile industry and of the centuries-old village history. The museum features original documents, objects and a wonderful collection of textile machinery.

The museum is located in the old town hall of Vriezenveen, right in the center. The museum is owned by the municipality of Twenterand and managed by the Vereniging Oud Vriezenveen.

The collection is divided into three themes: trade (The Rusluie), textile industry and village history.

The unique history of two centuries of trade relations between Vriezenveen and St. Petersburg has a special place in the museum. The Vriezenveen merchants who were active in this were called Ruisluie.

Textile industry in Twente has been intertwined with the local population for generations. It was therefore obvious that textile products, such as linen, formed the basis for the trade that the Rusluie from Vriezenveen conducted with St. Petersburg for 200 years.

The history of Vriezenveen began more than six hundred years ago with the reclamation of the high moor north of Almelo by the 'Vrije Vriezen'. Their activities created a characteristic ribbon development resulting in a village street with a length of over 5 kilometers.
