Kulturspeicher Dörenthe

Kulturspeicher Dörenthe

The highly visible, red-tiled "tower" of the Kulturspeicher, stretching over five floors on the Dortmund-Ems Canal, was built about 100 years ago as a temporary grain storage facility. Thick iron beams directed forces down over massive iron columns and the thick outer walls, allowing the ceilings that rest on thick wooden beams to be heavily loaded with grain. A bucket elevator carried the grain via a loading ramp directly from the canal to the various building levels.

History

With the rise of motorized shipping and the associated increased traffic, there was a need at the beginning of the 20th century for an intermediate storage facility for the greater volume of grain now being transported along the canal.

In the 1950s, the grain depot slowly lost its original significance, but since the port is an important junction - the Teutoburger Wald Eisenbahn (TWE), the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal and Bundeststrasse 219 converge here - the depot was converted at the beginning of the 1960s: a two-story reinforced concrete ramp system was created on the northwest side. However, this conversion did not prevent the facility from falling into disuse and decay.

Only in 1998 was the building put back into use: the owner brought sand to the first floor and then played bocce. When the idea arose to play children's theater in the rooms, the groundwork was laid for the redesign; a laborious restoration project, completed in August 2006, began.

Today, the Kulturspeicher is a dynamic cultural center with exhibitions, concerts, seminars, workshops and puppet theater.
