MOLEN NOOIT GEDACHT

At the end of 1850, the farmer Derk Jan Oudenampsen, born in Warnsveld in 1815, had the octagonal tower corn mill "Nooit Gedacht" built. He had shortly before purchased a piece of land, the Hunnekinkskamp. The mill was set up for grinding corn and pitch (pitch comes from the bark of oak trees and was ground as tannin for tanneries). The miller's house was added in 1854. Because of Oldenampsen's poor health, he was forced to turn the mill over to Herman Hendrikus Kok in 1858. This miller's son from Zutphen had to take out a loan from Willem Baron van Heeckeren van Waliën. The amount involved was fl 6,000.

Two years later he takes out another loan of fl. 3000,- to set up a steam engine with a number of stones in the house. This steam engine stood there until 1947. Despite the expansion, business does not go well for Kok. In 1869 it appears that he can no longer meet his obligations. The possessions are sold in a public sale in inn "De Pauw" in April 1869 in parts. The house with in it located, the in full operation steam corn mill with two pairs of stones and two large bules, is sold to the farmers Gerrit Jan Uenk and Jan Willem Heuvelink for the amount of Fl. 4000,-. The wind, corn, bark, peel and line flour mill with three pairs of griststones and further tools are purchased by his servant Jan Garssen. Only two weeks after his purchase, on May 8, 1869, the mill burned down due to lightning strikes. A report on this fire is recorded in the minutes of May 31, 1869, of the Warnsveld City Council.

In the same year the mill was rebuilt on the remaining stone base. The specifications for the reconstruction state that the contractor had to ensure that already on October 14, 1869, a couple of stones could be milled again. More than four years later, Garssen was also able to buy the houses and yard near the mill from Gerrit Jan Uenk and Jan Willem Heuvelink. That there were occasional problems with customers is evident from a minute book of the Old and New Hospital of Zutphen.

In August 1878, Garssen asked if he could be considered again to be allowed to grind grain of the Gasthuis. But he is not inclined to do so, because he would not have kept grain from different customers separate.

Two more times lightning strikes would set the mill on fire. Fortunately, on April 21, 1891, the damage was limited. Things fared differently for the mill on March 19 in 1905. Again the mill burned down. After repairing the stone base, millwright De Graaf from Zwolle built a new mill, which was grinding again in August of the same year.

Until 1971 the mill remained in the possession of the Garssen family. Since 1973 the mill has been owned by the 'Vereniging de Hollandsche Molen'. Since then, the mill has been kept running by enthusiastic volunteer millers. In 1987 a pair of worn-out feed stones was replaced by a new grinding pair. Its stones, because of their composition and sharpness, are especially suitable for grinding consumer meal. From then on, in addition to cattle feed, baking wheat is ground and flour and milk products are sold to home bakers. These include a limited range of mill flour products: whole wheat flour, wheat flour, four-seed flour, and, of course, pancake flour.
