Westfälisches Feldbahnmuseum, Lengerich

Westfälisches Feldbahnmuseum

The Westfälisches Feldbahnmuseum Lengerich aims to research and document the nature and history of this transportation system by preserving, restoring and presenting the historical field railway material. The diversity of the field railway system can be experienced in practice.

Special emphasis will be placed on the preservation of original vehicles, as well as written documents and photographs of field railroads in the region, i.e., railroads of:

  •  Cement, lime and brick industries,
  •  coal and ore mines,
  •  quarries,
  •  the extraction of sand, peat and clay, and
  •  the construction industry with its temporary construction field trails.

It is a collection in a living museum: touching allowed!

The presentation of typical features for field railroads offers further insight into the diversity.

Modest passenger transport provides typical "comfort".

                  Feldbahn history

Lengerich and its surroundings, the Münsterland region and the neighboring Osnabrücker Land are characterized by numerous deposits where mineral resources (coal, various ores, limestone, clay, sand, peat) have been and are still being extracted in recent decades.

Until a few decades ago, field railroads were a widespread and indispensable means of transporting raw materials from the extraction sites to the processing plants (so-called feeder lines) and also within the production facilities. For the people who worked there, they were an important part of the working environment. In addition, numerous inhabitants of this region got to know the field railroads as a part of the landscape and at that time they were the ideal "adventure playgrounds" for many young people.

As part of the further technical development of the transport system, they were gradually replaced by other means of transport (trucks, forklifts, conveyor belts) and after they were dismantled, only remnants such as former field railroads, cut-throughs and mining waste heaps remind us of the field railroads.

In only a few industries (e.g., peat extraction, clay pits, mining) can they still be found in operation. In its original appearance, the field railroad is in danger of disappearing more and more. The Westphalian Field Railway Museum therefore aims to preserve a representative collection of field railway equipment and present it to new generations.
