Baumwoll-Spinnerei und Mechanische Weberei Huesker

In December 1861 the company was founded as a limited partnership H. & J. Huesker & Co., in Gescher. The atmosphere of industrial change in the 19th century and the successful cultivation of flax and hemp made Münsterland a center of the European textile industry. In 1863, therefore, production of cotton fabrics began in the newly built factory building. The Wilhelmine era made rapid growth possible. By 1867 there were already 200 looms in production.

In addition to the mass market, an extensive niche market developed for special functional products in technically demanding and economically highly effective applications.

In 1958, Huesker recognized the excellent future prospects of synthetic fabrics and began producing technical textiles with the production of filter sails and dike bags.

This was followed by the development of geosynthetics with multiple functions. Demanding combination applications were designed for the functions of separating, filtering and draining.

The continuous expansion of the product range led to the founding of Huesker Synthetic GmbH - an independent, medium-sized company - in 1973. A global player with an extensive sales network of competent partners.

Monument

The former spinning mill of Huesker & Co. established in the course of industrialization in 1861 is a typical example of buildings for the textile industry in the region at the turn of the century. In the town of Gescher, which had become an important location for textile production, the Huesker spinning mill was built between 1905 and 1909 to the design of the Swiss architectural firm Séquin & Knobel.

The elongated three-story brick building features a five-story water tower and a boiler and engine room at the rear. Inside, the textile factory is planned according to functional aspects; its exterior is characterized by historicizing architectural elements. The large windows are decorated with yellow bricks. Notable is the elaborate wall design of the machine hall in the architectural conception of neoclassicism. The architectural upgrading of the machine hall emphasizes its important position in the overall structure of the spinning mill.

In 2011, new offices for the current company Huesker Synthetic GmbH were built in the listed building.
