Ankerpunten zijn (museale) lokaties die doorgaans in voldoende mate voor publiek geopend zijn en een historische relatie hebben met industriële ontwikkelingen, zoals het Oyfo Industriemuseum in Hengelo, het Baksteen en Dakpanmuseum De Panoven in Zevenaar, of het TextilWerk in Bocholt. Ankerpunten zijn ook spoorwegmusea en museumspoorljnen, alwaar de aandacht wordt gevestigd op de relatie tussen industriële productie,  infrastructuur en transport, zoals de Museum Buurspoorweg Haaksbergen-Boekelo en het Westfälisches Feldbahnmuseum in Lengerich. Een derde categorie Ankerpunten vormen de historische musea waar op de historische industriële ontwikkelingen wordt gereflecteerd. Denk daarbij aan De Museumfabriek in Enschede, het Nederlands Openluchtmuseum in Arnhem, het Stadsmuseum te Doetinchem, de Aaltense Musea, kult-Münsterland te Vreden of het Stadtmuseum in Nordhorn.
