The Pakkerij has important significance for the city's student image. Because of the location of the university campus outside the city center, Enschede long had the image of not being a real student city. In the early 1990s, the municipality decided to change the purpose of the building from store to catering establishment. This was followed by a thorough renovation in which the interior was removed and the building was rearranged. Various student associations then moved into De Pakkerij, elevating the building to the center of society life in Enschede.
