DE MUSEUMFABRIEK WINTERSWIJK

Experience the history of textile industry, coal transportation and public transportation in the Eastern Netherlands. Discover how important railroads were in the last century. Meet Jan Willink, founder of the first railroad in the Achterhoek and how this changed with the arrival of trucks and buses. Why natural gas in Groningen caused coal transport from the Ruhr to disappear in the 1960s.

A model railway keeps the memory of the Winterswijk railroad junction alive. A very faithful picture of the 1920s-1930s. A unique representation of a vanished reality. Spatial, in the colors of the time, with the trains of the time.

Our young visitors receive our Spoorzoeker. A booklet full of colorful animations, assignments and fun facts. Fun to look for the 14 assignments together. The assignments can be found throughout the museum.

Collection

Within Transit East are several historic vehicles that were active in the Eastern Netherlands. The mobile heritage collection gives a good picture of how public transport on the road developed. From the first T-Ford bus from 1923 to the last GSM bus that was still in service until the late 1990s. We also have a Bedford truck.

In addition to an ample collection of GTW (Geldersche Tramwegen) and GSM (Gelderse Streekvervoer Maatschappij) buses, the diesel railcar DE2, also known as the "Blue Angel," is managed by Transit East. These trains were put into service by the Dutch Railways in the 1950s and have operated in the Achterhoek region until the 1990s. The "Blue Angel" is therefore a true icon.

During opening days, the buses and train set can be viewed during the tour of the workshop. The buses are regularly used for tours. It may happen that not all buses are present on opening days.

History

Eastern Netherlands has a rich public transportation history. During a visit to the museum workshop, we will take you back to the era of the first railroad lines until now. There were many textile factories in Twente and the Achterhoek. Eastern Netherlands was the textile region of the Netherlands in the 20th century. Since 1860, the first railroad lines were built. Meant for the products of textile industry from Eastern Netherlands to Germany and coal transport from Germany to the Netherlands.

Winterswijk used to possess a large railroad yard, including two stations, three locomotive depots and a large shunting yard. Trains ran in five directions. The main function of the railroads was to transport coal, which came from the Ruhr region and was transported further to the western part of the Netherlands.

Those times are long gone. Around 1930, trucks and autobuses made their appearance, which accounted for some of the freight transport and especially passenger transport. No more freight trains arrive in Winterswijk today; but regional buses and regional passenger trains do.
