ERDÖLMUSEUM OSTERWALD

ERDÖLMUSEUM OSTERWALD

The "Erdölmuseum Osterwald" presents the history and present of oil and natural gas extraction. You will learn about the production of oil and natural gas and gain insight into the search, drilling and production of oil and further processing.

The museum is housed in a former school, after extensive renovation work as part of the village renewal. There are numerous objects, models and display boards in about 200 square meters. Many pieces come from a private collection.

On June 7, 1944, oil production from the Georgsdorf 1 probe began. This date can be seen as the birth of the domestic oil industry. Anyone driving through Osterwald today and seeing the up and down moving "Yes-Knicks" is reminded of the mineral wealth in Osterwald's deep underground.

Among other things, visitors learn that classic lattice towers based on the American model were used in the Osterwald oil field as late as the 1950s. These lattice towers were assembled piece by piece from bottom to top. The installation took a relatively long time. For this reason, the grid towers were moved (rolled) from one wellbore to the next when assembled, if there was a short drilling distance. Steel drilling towers were used in Osterwald by Preussag and Elwerath. The Borgholzhausen drilling company used wooden towers in Osterwald.
